HighVRAM Hardware Watch

How much VRAM do you need for a 32B LLM?

Short answer: a 32B or 33B model does not have one VRAM requirement. The exact artifact, quantization, context, KV-cache precision, runtime buffers and concurrency decide the total. As a planning rule, 16GB usually requires a small quantization or CPU offload; 24GB is a practical target for many 4- and 5-bit artifacts; 32GB provides more room for 6-bit files and context; 48GB opens the official example’s 8-bit path with useful headroom. Verify the exact file before buying.

Estimate your setup: enter 32B, precision, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. Treat the result as a planning range, then compare it with your runtime’s estimate for the exact artifact.

32B VRAM requirements by precision

Raw-weight arithmetic is parameters × bits per weight ÷ 8. It is useful for orientation, but real files include quantization metadata and mixed-precision tensors. The arithmetic also excludes KV cache and runtime allocations.

Nominal precisionRaw weights for exactly 32B parametersPlanning implication
2-bit8GBLeaves room on 16GB, but quality and format support must be tested
3-bit12GBCan target 16GB only after complete overhead is checked
4-bit16GBRaw arithmetic alone does not fit safely in a 16GB pool
5-bit20GBOften points toward 24GB or more
6-bit24GBRaw weights already consume the nominal 24GB tier
8-bit32GBRequires more than 32GB once cache and runtime allocations are included
16-bit64GBRequires a larger-memory or split/offload path
Decimal GB arithmetic for exactly 32 billion parameters—not a measured loading requirement.

Real example: Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct GGUF

Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repository identifies a 33B-class model and currently displays these approximate artifact sizes:

QuantizationOfficial repository displaySingle-device implication
Q2_K12.3GBBelow 16GB before cache and runtime overhead; quality must be tested
Q3_K_M15.9GBA nominal 16GB pool leaves essentially no room
Q4_K_M19.9GBA practical 24GB candidate only after cache and overhead are counted
Q5_K_M23.3GBTight or impractical on 24GB once the complete workload is included
Q6_K26.9GBPoints toward a 32GB or larger pool
Q8_034.8GBLarger than 32GB before cache and runtime allocations
Repository display values checked October 25, 2026. Download size is not peak resident memory.

Context can move the answer

Qwen’s official model configuration lists 64 layers, 8 key/value heads and 128 dimensions per head. An illustrative FP16 KV-cache tensor payload for one sequence is:

2 × 64 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dimension × token slots × 2 bytes

That is 2GiB at 8,192 token slots and 8GiB at 32,768 slots. The leading 2 counts keys and values. This is tensor-payload arithmetic, not a runtime allocation measurement: cache precision, padding, batching and implementation details can change it.

Exact 30B example: the Muse Glimmer 30B memory guide shows why Meta targets 24GB for its 16.8GB Q4 build and 32GB for the 19.7GB dynamic build, including separate vision and drafter files.

What each memory tier means

Memory tierReasonable starting expectationExamples to compare
16GBSmall quantization, reduced context or CPU offload; not a comfortable 4-bit defaultConsumer GPU or 24GB alternative after validating compromise
24GBMany 4-bit configurations; some 5-bit files are tightRTX 3090, RTX 4090
32GBMore context and 6-bit flexibility; official Q8_0 example still exceeds the poolRTX 5090
48GBRoom for the official 34.8GB Q8_0 example plus cache/runtime allocationsFive 48GB GPU paths
64GB+ dedicated or unifiedLarger precision, context, concurrency or shared-system headroomMI210, Mac Studio

Can two smaller GPUs help?

Only when the runtime explicitly partitions the model. Two GPUs remain separate memory pools, and each needs its own cache/buffer headroom. PCIe topology, lanes, cooling and power also matter. Read how multi-GPU VRAM works before adding capacity labels together.

What about CPU offload?

CPU offload can place some model layers in system RAM and make a 32B artifact load on a smaller GPU. It does not make system RAM behave like VRAM. Measure prompt processing, generation speed and system-memory pressure with your intended split; see the CPU-offload guide.

A purchase checklist

  1. Choose the exact model repository and artifact.
  2. Record quantization, download size, context length, cache precision and concurrency.
  3. Add operating/runtime allocations and safety margin instead of filling nominal VRAM to 100%.
  4. Confirm the full GPU, OS, driver, framework, runtime and kernel support chain.
  5. Test a representative long request and compare answer quality as well as latency.
