Short answer: Radeon RX 7900 XTX provides 24GB of dedicated GDDR6 memory, enough capacity for many local-AI workloads that exceed 16GB. Capacity is only half the decision: verify the exact operating system, ROCm release, framework, runtime and kernels before buying. A CUDA-only workflow does not become compatible merely because the AMD card has enough memory.
Check both gates: calculate the complete allocation in the LLM VRAM calculator, then confirm the exact stack in AMD’s current ROCm compatibility matrix. File fit does not prove software support or measured performance.
Official RX 7900 XTX specifications that matter
| Official specification | RX 7900 XTX | Local-AI planning meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | RDNA 3 | ROCm identifies the RX 7000 family as gfx1100-class; verify the exact current matrix |
| Memory | 24GB GDDR6 | Weights, cache, workspace, display use and concurrency share this capacity |
| Memory interface | 384-bit | Interface width does not establish application throughput |
| Published memory bandwidth | Up to 960GB/s | Peak bandwidth is not a token-rate or latency result |
| Compute units / stream processors | 96 / 6,144 | Counts cannot be normalized directly against another architecture |
| Game / boost clock | 2.3GHz / up to 2.5GHz | Partner boards, power limits and sustained clocks vary |
| Typical board power | 355W | Measure complete-workload wall power and cooling |
| Minimum PSU recommendation | 800W | AMD notes that actual system requirements may differ |
| Reference size | 287mm; 2.5-slot | Partner boards vary; verify case, cable and airflow clearance |
| Reference power connectors | 2 × 8-pin | Confirm the exact board and PSU cabling |
Exact 32B file boundaries on 24GB
The following values come from Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repository. Margins subtract displayed file size from nominal 24GB capacity only; they exclude KV cache, runtime workspace, display use, modality and concurrency.
| Official artifact | Displayed size | 24GB file-only margin | Planning result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-32B Q2_K | 12.3GB | 11.7GB | Capacity fits; quality and full allocation require testing |
| Qwen2.5-32B Q3_K_M | 15.9GB | 8.1GB | Useful starting point; check cache and workspace |
| Qwen2.5-32B Q4_K_M | 19.9GB | 4.1GB | Capacity-sensitive; calculate the complete run |
| Qwen2.5-32B Q5_K_M | 23.3GB | 0.7GB | Not a safe resident target |
| Qwen2.5-32B Q6_K | 26.9GB | Does not fit wholly | Requires offload, another placement or more device memory |
| Qwen2.5-32B Q8_0 | 34.8GB | Does not fit wholly | Move to another artifact or capacity tier |
Q4_K_M leaves 4.1GB of nominal file-only room; Q5_K_M leaves an unsafe 0.7GB; Q6_K and Q8_0 exceed the card. Read the 32B VRAM guide and the 24GB GPU buyer guide.
ROCm support is version-specific
AMD’s current ROCm compatibility documentation includes the Radeon RX 7000 series, but support is a matrix of GPU family, ROCm version, operating system, driver and framework. Check the exact release rather than relying on an old tutorial. Confirm that the application supports ROCm or another intended AMD backend, that required operators and quantizations work, and that installation instructions match your OS. Windows, WSL and Linux support are not interchangeable.
Capacity does not establish a CUDA comparison
Do not compare RX 7900 XTX with a 24GB NVIDIA card using core counts, TFLOPS or gaming charts. Hold model revision, quantization, runtime/version, backend, kernels, context, cache, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency and timing constant. Report unsupported features, CPU fallback, offload, compilation changes and failed runs rather than hiding them.
Board and used checks
Confirm exact board identity, 24GB runtime-visible capacity, dimensions, slot width, connector routing, PSU headroom, cooling, clocks and power limit. For used hardware, inspect repair history, fan behavior, memory stability, hotspot-to-core temperature delta, warranty and return protection with the used-GPU checklist.
Measure instead of inferring
A reproducible result records exact board, OS, driver, ROCm/runtime and version, model revision, quantization, backend and kernels, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, timing definition, repetitions, exposed memory, peak device memory, CPU fallback or offload, system RAM, power limit and wall power.
