RTX 4090 24GB vs RTX 5080 16GB for local AI

Short answer: RTX 4090 is the capacity-first choice when the complete local-AI workload needs more than 16GB and can use its 24GB pool. RTX 5080 is the newer, lower-power Blackwell path when the same workload fits comfortably inside 16GB and measured results justify the offer. Do not trade away eight gigabytes of device memory merely because the RTX 5080 is newer, and do not assume the RTX 4090 is faster for every runtime because it has more memory.

Capacity comes first: enter the exact artifact, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. If the complete allocation exceeds 16GB, RTX 5080 bandwidth and newer-generation features do not make it resident.

Exact model-file boundaries: 16GB versus 24GB

The following values come from Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct-GGUF and Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repositories. Margins are file-size subtraction from nominal capacity only; they exclude cache, runtime workspace, display use, modality and concurrency.

This is the central tradeoff: both cards can target many 14B configurations, but the RTX 4090’s 24GB pool opens the official 32B Q4_K_M file with only 4.1GB of nominal room. That still requires a complete memory check. The RTX 5080 is a low-bit or offload path for the same 32B example. Read the 32B VRAM requirements guide and the 14B guide.

Choose RTX 4090 when capacity changes the workload

  • The exact model, context or concurrency exceeds a comfortable 16GB allocation.
  • A 24GB resident path avoids CPU offload that would otherwise change the workload.
  • The used or new offer has acceptable condition, warranty and return protection.
  • The case, PSU, connector route and cooling can sustain the exact partner board.

Review the RTX 4090 hardware page and the 24GB GPU buyer guide. For a used card, inspect connector history, physical damage, fan behavior, hotspot-to-core temperature delta, stability and seller evidence.

Choose RTX 5080 when the workload fits in 16GB

  • The complete measured workload stays comfortably below 16GB.
  • Your exact runtime and extensions support Blackwell capability 12.0.
  • Matched testing provides sufficient prompt-processing and generation performance.
  • Lower 360W reference board power, a two-slot Founders Edition path or a current warranty matters.

Generation is not a benchmark

RTX 5080 has newer Blackwell tensor hardware and media blocks, while RTX 4090 has more CUDA cores, more capacity and slightly higher published memory bandwidth. None of those facts alone supplies prompt-processing rate, generation rate, time to first token or energy per completed request. Runtime support, precision, kernels, context, batch, concurrency, power limit, clocks and placement can change the result.

Do not hide offload in a speed chart

A controlled comparison holds model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, timing boundary and repetitions constant. Record exact board, power limit, clocks, display use, exposed memory, peak device memory, CPU offload, system RAM and wall power. If the RTX 5080 spills layers or cache to the CPU while the RTX 4090 remains resident, disclose the different placement instead of presenting the result as a pure generation comparison.

A five-step purchase test

  1. Choose the exact model artifact, context, cache precision and concurrency.
  2. Measure or estimate the complete peak allocation and preserve headroom.
  3. Confirm capability 12.0 support before treating RTX 5080 as a viable path.
  4. Run a matched long workload and record latency, throughput, failures, memory, temperature, noise and wall power.
  5. Compare delivered price, warranty, return terms, board condition and any PSU or case changes.
