Short answer: RTX 4060 Ti 16GB and RTX 5060 Ti 16GB have the same nominal capacity, so they share broadly similar model-fit ceilings. Choose the RTX 4060 Ti path when the Ada software stack is already validated and the complete offer is stronger; choose RTX 5060 Ti when Blackwell/CUDA capability 12.0 support is confirmed and the newer generation justifies its price, power and integration cost. Equal VRAM does not mean equal speed, but neither architecture adds memory headroom.
Check the workload first: use the LLM VRAM calculator. If the complete workload needs more than 16GB, neither card solves the capacity problem without a smaller artifact, shorter context, offload or explicit multi-device placement.
RTX 4060 Ti 16GB vs RTX 5060 Ti 16GB specifications
| Official reference specification | RTX 4060 Ti 16GB | RTX 5060 Ti 16GB |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Ada Lovelace | Blackwell |
| Memory | 16GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR7 |
| Memory interface | 128-bit | 128-bit |
| CUDA cores | 4,352 | 4,608 |
| CUDA capability | 8.9 | 12.0 |
| Total graphics power | 165W or 160W | 180W |
| Reference required system power | 550W | 600W |
| NVLink | No | No |
| Lower-capacity sibling | RTX 4060 Ti 8GB | RTX 5060 Ti 8GB |
Capacity is a tie
Both cards expose 16GB of dedicated memory in the variants compared here. That means a 17GB complete allocation does not fit wholly on either device, while an artifact and runtime that fit comfortably on one should not gain extra memory headroom merely by moving to the other.
GDDR7 versus GDDR6, architecture and memory behavior can affect measured performance. They do not change 16GB into a larger pool. Keep fit and speed as separate decisions.
Model-fit implications at 16GB
- 7B-class: the official Qwen2.5-7B GGUF example ranges from 3.02GB Q2_K to approximately 8.10GB Q8_0. Both cards can provide substantial nominal room after the exact cache and runtime are checked.
- 14B-class: the official Qwen2.5-14B example displays Q4_K_M at 8.99GB, Q5_K_M at 10.5GB and Q6_K at 12.1GB. These can be practical 16GB candidates; the 15.7GB Q8_0 artifact leaves no safe working margin.
- 32B-class: the official Qwen2.5-32B example displays Q2_K at 12.3GB, Q3_K_M at 15.9GB and Q4_K_M at 19.9GB. Sixteen gigabytes remains a constrained low-bit/offload tier on either GPU.

Ada versus Blackwell software support
NVIDIA lists CUDA capability 8.9 for RTX 4060 Ti and 12.0 for RTX 5060 Ti. A newer capability can require newer drivers, framework builds, runtimes and compiled extensions. It does not guarantee that every existing application or plugin is ready.
| Check | RTX 4060 Ti 16GB | RTX 5060 Ti 16GB |
|---|---|---|
| GPU driver | Verify Ada support for the selected OS | Verify the installed driver explicitly supports the Blackwell card |
| Framework/runtime | Confirm compatible capability 8.9 build | Confirm capability 12.0 is included rather than assumed |
| Compiled extensions | Check quantization and attention kernels | Check for Blackwell-ready binaries or supported source builds |
| Frontend features | Test the intended model format and offload controls | Repeat the same test; newer hardware does not supply missing software features |
Power and system integration
NVIDIA lists RTX 4060 Ti at 160–165W total graphics power with a 550W reference system requirement. RTX 5060 Ti is listed at 180W and 600W. These figures do not establish energy used per generated token, and partner-card limits can vary.
- Check the exact board’s dimensions and slot thickness.
- Verify power connectors and PSU cables for that model.
- Allow unobstructed airflow under sustained inference.
- Compare measured wall power or board power during the same workload.
Why cores and gaming charts do not settle local AI
RTX 5060 Ti has more CUDA cores and a newer architecture, but local-AI performance depends on precision, kernels, runtime, context, memory behavior, clocks, power and CPU interaction. NVIDIA’s gaming comparisons use game workloads and graphics features; they do not measure prompt processing, time to first token or token generation for the model you intend to run.
Test both cards with the same artifact, runtime version, prompt, context, output length and power settings. Record memory use, prompt-processing rate, generation rate, errors, temperature, noise and wall power.
When RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is the stronger path
- The exact Ada software stack is already validated and stable.
- The offer has a better price, warranty, return policy or partner-card design.
- The lower reference power envelope better suits the system.
- The intended workload fits well below 16GB and does not need Blackwell-specific features.
When RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is the stronger path
- The complete Blackwell software chain is verified.
- The newer architecture materially improves your measured application.
- The exact card, warranty and seller terms justify the purchase premium.
- The system supports its power, connector, cooling and physical requirements.
Exact product identity still matters
Both product families also contain 8GB variants. Confirm the complete partner model number, listing memory field and product label. For used or open-box hardware, verify installed memory during the return window. An 8GB card is not interchangeable with the 16GB card evaluated here.
A purchase checklist
- Verify the exact card is the 16GB variant.
- Calculate complete workload memory and preserve headroom.
- Verify capability 8.9 or 12.0 support through the whole stack.
- Check partner-card dimensions, cooling, connector and power limits.
- Compare warranty, return policy and total system cost.
- Run the same long-context workload on both paths where possible.
- Keep fit, speed, energy, quality and price as separate measurements.
