Short answer: a 14B or 15B-class model does not have one VRAM requirement. The exact artifact, quantization, context, cache precision and runtime overhead decide the total. In the official Qwen2.5-14B GGUF example, 8GB is a tight low-bit target, 12GB can handle many 4-bit paths but leaves limited room for larger quantizations, 16GB opens more 5-/6-bit options, and 24GB gives the 8-bit artifact materially more headroom. Verify the exact file before buying.

Estimate your setup: enter 14B, precision, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. Treat the result as a planning range, then compare it with your runtime’s estimate for the exact artifact.

How much VRAM do you need for a 7B LLM?
Compare 4GB through 16GB tiers using official Qwen2.5-7B GGUF sizes, explicit KV-cache arithmetic and complete-workload headroom.

14B VRAM requirements by precision

Raw-weight arithmetic is parameters × bits per weight ÷ 8. It excludes quantization metadata, mixed-precision tensors, KV cache and runtime allocations.

Nominal precisionRaw weights for exactly 14B parametersPlanning implication
2-bit3.5GBLeaves room on 8GB, but quality and format support require testing
3-bit5.25GBCan target 8GB only after complete overhead is checked
4-bit7GBReal artifacts can exceed 8GB before cache and buffers
5-bit8.75GBPoints toward 12GB or more
6-bit10.5GBCan be tight on 12GB after cache and runtime overhead
8-bit14GBRequires more than 16GB in some real artifacts/configurations
16-bit28GBRequires a larger-memory, split or offload path
Decimal GB arithmetic for exactly 14 billion parameters—not a measured loading requirement.

Real example: Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct GGUF

Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct-GGUF repository identifies a 15B-class model and currently displays these approximate artifact sizes:

QuantizationOfficial repository displaySingle-device implication
Q2_K5.77GBBelow 8GB before cache/runtime overhead; output quality must be tested
Q3_K_M7.34GBA nominal 8GB pool leaves very little room
Q4_K_M8.99GBLarger than 8GB; a practical 12GB candidate only after overhead is counted
Q5_K_M10.5GBTight on 12GB once cache and runtime allocations are included
Q6_K12.1GBPoints toward 16GB or more
Q8_015.7GBA nominal 16GB pool leaves essentially no working room
Repository display values checked October 25, 2026. Download size is not peak resident memory.

Context can consume the remaining margin

Qwen’s official configuration lists 48 layers, 8 key/value heads and 128 dimensions per head. An illustrative FP16 KV-cache tensor payload for one sequence is:

2 × 48 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dimension × token slots × 2 bytes

That is 1.5GiB at 8,192 token slots and 6GiB at 32,768 slots. The leading 2 counts keys and values. This is tensor-payload arithmetic, not a runtime allocation measurement: cache precision, padding, batching and implementation details can change it.

What each memory tier means

Memory tierReasonable starting expectationDo not assume
8GBSmall 2-/3-bit artifacts, reduced context or CPU offloadThat a typical 4-bit artifact fits completely
12GBMany 4-bit paths; selected 5-bit configurations may be tightThat a 10.5GB file leaves enough cache/runtime room
16GBMore practical 5-/6-bit paths and context flexibilityThat the 15.7GB Q8_0 example fits safely
24GBQ8-sized artifacts plus materially more cache/runtime headroomThat unused capacity guarantees higher speed
32GB+Larger context, concurrency or higher-precision optionsThat the software supports every GPU/platform

Can CPU offload or two GPUs help?

CPU offload can place some layers in system RAM, but system RAM does not behave like VRAM. Measure prompt processing and generation with the intended split; see the CPU-offload guide. Two GPUs remain separate pools unless the runtime explicitly partitions the model; read how multi-GPU VRAM works before adding capacity labels together.

A purchase checklist

  1. Choose the exact repository and artifact.
  2. Record quantization, file size, context, cache precision and concurrency.
  3. Add runtime allocations and safety headroom.
  4. Confirm the full GPU, OS, driver, runtime and kernel support chain.
  5. Run a representative long request and compare output quality as well as latency.
