RTX 5070 Ti 16GB vs RTX 5080 16GB for local AI

Short answer: RTX 5070 Ti 16GB and RTX 5080 16GB share the same nominal model-fit ceiling. RTX 5080 publishes somewhat higher bandwidth and more CUDA cores, but also raises reference board power from 300W to 360W and the system-power recommendation from 750W to 850W. Choose RTX 5080 only when a reproducible local-AI workload shows enough time-to-result or throughput benefit to justify the complete price, power, cooling and integration difference—not because it fits larger models.

Capacity is a tie: use the LLM VRAM calculator with the exact artifact, context and concurrency. A complete allocation above 16GB does not fit wholly on either card.

Both cards have the same 16GB fit ceiling

A model, cache and runtime configuration that needs 17GB does not fit wholly on either GPU. Higher bandwidth and core count can affect measured speed, but they do not increase capacity.

  • 7B-class: the official Qwen2.5-7B GGUF example ranges from 3.02GB Q2_K through approximately 8.10GB Q8_0. Both cards can leave useful nominal room after cache and runtime allocations are checked.
  • 14B-class: the official Qwen2.5-14B example displays Q4_K_M at 8.99GB, Q5_K_M at 10.5GB and Q6_K at 12.1GB. These can be practical 16GB candidates; the 15.7GB Q8_0 artifact leaves no safe working margin.
  • 32B-class: the official Qwen2.5-32B example displays Q2_K at 12.3GB, Q3_K_M at 15.9GB and Q4_K_M at 19.9GB. Sixteen gigabytes remains a constrained low-bit or offload tier.

The specification gap is smaller than the model-name gap

RTX 5080 publishes 960GB/s memory bandwidth versus 896GB/s for RTX 5070 Ti, with 10,752 versus 8,960 CUDA cores. These are meaningful differences, but local-AI performance depends on precision, kernels, runtime, context, batch/concurrency, clocks, power limits, thermals and CPU interaction. Do not translate either ratio directly into tokens per second.

Test the same model artifact, runtime build, prompt, context, output length and power configuration. Record prompt-processing rate, generation rate, time to first token, resident memory, errors, temperature, noise and wall energy for a completed task.

Software compatibility is largely shared

Both GPUs are Blackwell devices with CUDA capability 12.0. Verify driver, framework, inference runtime, quantization and attention kernels, compiled extensions and frontend support. Equal compute capability does not guarantee identical results, but it removes the Ada-versus-Blackwell generation split present in older comparisons.

Power and integration can decide the purchase

NVIDIA lists 300W total graphics power and a 750W reference system requirement for RTX 5070 Ti, versus 360W and 850W for RTX 5080. The 60W board-power difference is not a direct energy-per-token comparison; measure wall energy for the same completed workload.

When RTX 5070 Ti 16GB is the stronger path

  • The workload fits in 16GB and measured performance is sufficient.
  • The lower board-power and PSU requirement better suit the system.
  • The complete offer has better price, warranty, return terms or partner design.
  • The saved budget is more useful for RAM, storage, CPU, cooling or a future higher-capacity GPU.

When RTX 5080 16GB is the stronger path

  • The same reproducible workload shows a material time-to-result or throughput gain.
  • The system safely supports the higher connector, PSU and cooling requirements.
  • The measured benefit matters enough to justify the price and energy tradeoff.
  • The exact card has acceptable dimensions, acoustics, warranty and return protection.

A decision checklist

  1. Calculate the full workload allocation and preserve headroom.
  2. Confirm 16GB is enough before comparing performance.
  3. Verify capability 12.0 support through the entire stack.
  4. Compare exact partner cards, not only GPU names.
  5. Check PSU, connector, case, airflow and sustained thermals.
  6. Benchmark the same long-context workload.
  7. Compare fit, speed, wall energy, acoustics, price and return protection separately.
