Short answer: the best AMD GPU for local AI depends first on deployment class. Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the practical 24GB desktop path; Radeon PRO W7900 raises a conventional workstation to 48GB; Instinct MI210 is a 64GB passive PCIe accelerator for server airflow; MI300X, MI325X, MI350X and MI355X are 192–288GB OAM data-center parts, not drop-in desktop cards.
Do not choose on VRAM alone. Confirm the exact ROCm release, operating system, runtime, framework, operators and model format before buying. Then calculate weights, KV cache, workspace, display use and concurrency with the local-AI hardware recommender.
AMD local-AI paths at a glance
| Path | Dedicated memory | Physical deployment | Best starting use | Critical gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 7900 XTX | 24GB GDDR6 | Active desktop add-in card | High-capacity consumer workstation | Exact ROCm/app support and partner-board fit |
| Radeon PRO W7900 | 48GB GDDR6 ECC | Active, triple-slot PCIe workstation card | Single-workstation 48GB capacity | Workstation price, application support and 295W board planning |
| Instinct MI210 | 64GB HBM2e | Passive, dual-slot PCIe server accelerator | Server-based 64GB compute | Forced chassis airflow; no ordinary desktop cooling path |
| MI300X / MI325X | 192GB / 256GB HBM | OAM platform | Large-model data-center inference and training | Qualified platform, power, cooling and software stack |
| MI350X / MI355X | 288GB HBM3E | OAM platform | Maximum current AMD per-accelerator capacity in this guide | Platform procurement, liquid/passive cooling and ROCm readiness |
The best choice by deployment
Best AMD desktop path: Radeon RX 7900 XTX
Choose the 24GB RX 7900 XTX when you need a conventional consumer desktop card and your exact application has a working AMD backend. It is the lowest-friction physical installation here, but software validation is still mandatory. Its 24GB capacity can hold many quantized models that exceed 16GB, yet a file fitting in memory does not prove the full run fits or performs well.
Best single-workstation capacity: Radeon PRO W7900
The W7900 doubles the consumer Radeon path to 48GB while retaining an active PCIe workstation form factor and display outputs. AMD specifies 48GB GDDR6 with ECC, 864GB/s peak memory bandwidth, 295W total board power and active cooling. That makes it physically different from passive Instinct server cards—but it does not guarantee that every ROCm framework or kernel supports the board.
Best used-server bridge: Instinct MI210
MI210 provides 64GB HBM2e on a PCIe Gen4 add-in card. AMD describes it as a passive, 300W server accelerator. Treat airflow as a system requirement, not an optional fan tweak. It has no consumer display-card role; plan chassis, power, driver and remote-management behavior before purchase.
Best large-model platform: MI300X through MI355X
These are platform decisions. AMD documents 192GB for MI300X, 256GB for MI325X, and 288GB for MI350X and MI355X. All four are OAM accelerators with passive or liquid thermal designs. Procurement should begin with a qualified server or cloud platform, not an assumption that an OAM module fits a PCIe workstation.
Three checks before spending money
- Capacity: calculate weights, KV cache, workspace, modality and concurrency—not only download size.
- Compatibility: verify the exact GPU, ROCm release, OS, framework and application in current documentation. Read the CUDA versus ROCm guide.
- Deployment: confirm slot or OAM platform, airflow, power, connectors, remote access and display requirements.
Measure the result you need
Do not infer tokens per second from bandwidth, TFLOPS, compute-unit counts or gaming charts. A useful comparison holds model revision, quantization, runtime/version, backend, kernels, context, cache precision, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency and timing definition constant. Record peak device memory, CPU fallback, offload, system RAM, wall power and failed runs.
Submit a reproducible benchmark. Use an available hardware starter where offered; for W7900, MI210, MI300X or MI325X, enter the exact hardware manually if it is not listed.
