RTX 3090 24GB vs RTX 5080 16GB for local AI

Short answer: RTX 3090 is the used-market capacity choice when the complete workload needs more than 16GB and fits inside 24GB. RTX 5080 is the newer, lower-power Blackwell choice when the same workload fits comfortably inside 16GB and matched testing justifies the offer. Do not trade away eight gigabytes merely because the RTX 5080 is newer, and do not treat a used RTX 3090 as value without condition evidence.

Capacity comes first: enter the exact artifact, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. If the complete allocation exceeds 16GB, newer Blackwell features cannot keep it resident on RTX 5080.

The following values come from Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct-GGUF and Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repositories. Margins are file-size subtraction from nominal capacity only; they exclude cache, runtime workspace, display use, modality and concurrency.

Both cards can target many 14B configurations, but RTX 3090’s 24GB pool opens the listed 32B Q4 file with only 4.1GB of nominal room. That still requires a complete memory check. RTX 5080 is a low-bit or offload path for the same example. Read the 32B VRAM guide and the 14B guide.

Choose RTX 3090 when used 24GB changes fit

  • The complete workload exceeds a comfortable 16GB allocation but fits inside 24GB.
  • A resident path avoids CPU offload that would otherwise change the run.
  • The used price remains attractive after cooling, power and inspection costs.
  • The exact card passes sustained memory, stability and thermal checks.

Review the RTX 3090 page, the 24GB GPU buyer guide and the used-GPU checklist.

Choose RTX 5080 when the workload fits in 16GB

  • The complete measured workload stays comfortably below 16GB.
  • Your exact runtime and extensions support Blackwell capability 12.0.
  • Matched testing provides sufficient prompt-processing and generation performance.
  • A two-slot Founders Edition path, current warranty or newer media features matter.

Review the RTX 5080 guide and the 16GB GPU buyer guide.

NVLink does not make automatic 48GB

Two RTX 3090 cards remain separate devices. A runtime must explicitly shard weights and cache, some allocations may be replicated, and peer transfers have costs. Report topology, placement and per-device peak separately. Read how multi-GPU memory works.

A controlled comparison

Hold model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, timing boundary and repetitions constant. Record exact board, used condition, power limit, clocks, display use, exposed memory, peak device memory, CPU offload, system RAM and wall power. If RTX 5080 spills layers or cache while RTX 3090 remains resident, disclose the placement difference.
