Short answer: RTX 3090 is the used-market 24GB Ampere path; RTX 5090 is the current 32GB Blackwell path when eight additional gigabytes, newer software support or measured throughput justify the much newer platform and higher board power. Capacity, condition, compatibility and complete-system cost must be decided before treating generation as the answer.
Start with the workload: enter the exact artifact, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. A newer card cannot repair a capacity mismatch, and a cheaper used card is not value if its condition or placement changes the run.
RTX 3090 vs RTX 5090 specifications for local AI
| Official reference specification | RTX 3090 | RTX 5090 | Planning meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Ampere | Blackwell | Runtime, kernels and extensions must support the exact generation |
| Memory | 24GB GDDR6X | 32GB GDDR7 | RTX 5090 adds 8GB of nominal device memory |
| Memory interface | 384-bit | 512-bit | Interface width alone is not a token-rate result |
| Published memory bandwidth | 936.2GB/s | 1,792GB/s | Useful specification, not a universal application-speed ratio |
| CUDA cores | 10,496 | 21,760 | Cross-generation core counts require matched measurement |
| Reference boost clock | 1.70GHz | 2.41GHz | Partner boards and sustained clocks vary |
| CUDA capability | 8.6 | 12.0 | Compiled software must support the exact card |
| Total graphics power | 350W | 575W | Compare energy per completed workload and full-system cooling |
| Required system power | 750W reference | 1,000W reference | Actual requirements depend on the complete configuration |
| Founders Edition size | 313 × 138mm; 3-slot specification | 304 × 137mm; 3-slot specification | Partner boards vary; verify clearance, connector routing and airflow |
| NVLink | Yes | No | RTX 3090 links still require software-aware sharding; memory is not automatically pooled |
Exact 32B model-file boundaries: 24GB versus 32GB
Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repository displays the following artifact sizes. Margins are file-size subtraction from nominal capacity only; they exclude KV cache, runtime workspace, display use, modality and concurrency.
| Official artifact | Displayed size | RTX 3090 24GB file-only margin | RTX 5090 32GB file-only margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2_K | 12.3GB | 11.7GB; quality and full allocation still need testing | 19.7GB |
| Q3_K_M | 15.9GB | 8.1GB | 16.1GB |
| Q4_K_M | 19.9GB | 4.1GB | 12.1GB |
| Q5_K_M | 23.3GB | 0.7GB; not a safe resident target | 8.7GB |
| Q6_K | 26.9GB | Does not fit wholly | 5.1GB |
| Q8_0 | 34.8GB | Does not fit wholly | Does not fit wholly |
RTX 3090 can hold the listed Q4 file with 4.1GB of nominal room, but Q5 leaves an unsafe 0.7GB and Q6 exceeds 24GB before runtime allocations. RTX 5090 leaves 12.1GB, 8.7GB and 5.1GB for those files respectively; the listed 34.8GB Q8 file still exceeds it. Read the 32B VRAM requirements guide.
Choose RTX 3090 when used 24GB value wins
- The complete measured workload remains comfortably inside 24GB.
- The delivered used price leaves room for inspection, cooling and system upgrades.
- Your stack is proven on Ampere capability 8.6.
- The exact card passes sustained stability, memory and thermal tests with acceptable warranty or return protection.
Review the RTX 3090 page, the 24GB GPU buyer guide and the used-GPU checklist. Ask for exact board identity, repair history, connector condition, fan behavior, hotspot-to-core delta and a return window.
Choose RTX 5090 when 32GB changes the run
- The model, cache, context or concurrency needs more than a comfortable 24GB allocation.
- A resident 32GB path avoids CPU offload that would otherwise change the comparison.
- Your exact software chain supports Blackwell capability 12.0.
- Matched testing justifies the higher purchase price, 575W reference board power and complete-system burden.

NVLink does not make automatic 48GB
RTX 3090 supports NVLink, but two cards remain separate devices. A runtime must explicitly shard weights and cache, peer transfers have costs, and some allocations may be replicated. Report topology, placement and per-device peak separately. Read how multi-GPU memory works before treating two cards as one capacity tier.
A controlled comparison
Hold model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, timing boundary and repetitions constant. Record exact board, used condition, power limit, clocks, display use, exposed memory, peak device memory, CPU offload, system RAM and wall power. Do not normalize an offloaded or spilled 24GB run against a resident 32GB run.
