Short answer: RTX 4090 is the lower-power 24GB Ada path; RTX 5090 is the 32GB Blackwell path when eight additional gigabytes materially change model, context or concurrency fit. Do not assume the RTX 5090 is automatically the better value, and do not treat the RTX 4090 as equivalent when the complete workload exceeds 24GB.
Start with fit: enter the exact artifact, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. Compare speed only after both cards use the same placement.
RTX 4090 vs RTX 5090 specifications for local AI
| Official reference specification | RTX 4090 | RTX 5090 | Planning meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Ada Lovelace | Blackwell | RTX 5090 needs a software chain that supports the newer generation |
| Memory | 24GB GDDR6X | 32GB GDDR7 | RTX 5090 adds 8GB of nominal device memory |
| Memory interface | 384-bit | 512-bit | Interface width alone is not a token-rate result |
| Published memory bandwidth | 1,008GB/s | 1,792GB/s | Useful specification, not a universal workload-speed ratio |
| CUDA cores | 16,384 | 21,760 | Cross-generation core counts require matched measurement |
| Reference boost clock | 2.52GHz | 2.41GHz | Partner boards and sustained clocks vary |
| CUDA capability | 8.9 | 12.0 | Runtime, kernels and extensions must support the exact card |
| Total graphics power | 450W | 575W | Compare energy per completed workload and full-system cooling |
| Required system power | 850W reference | 1,000W reference | Actual requirements depend on the complete configuration |
| Founders Edition size | 304 × 137mm; 3-slot specification | 304 × 137mm; 3-slot specification | Partner boards vary; verify clearance, connector routing and airflow |
| NVLink | No | No | Two cards do not become one automatic pooled-memory device |
Exact 32B model-file boundaries: 24GB versus 32GB
Qwen’s official Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct-GGUF repository displays the following artifact sizes. Margins are simple file-size subtraction from nominal capacity; they exclude KV cache, runtime workspace, display use, modality and concurrency.
| Official artifact | Displayed size | RTX 4090 24GB file-only margin | RTX 5090 32GB file-only margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2_K | 12.3GB | 11.7GB; quality and full allocation still need testing | 19.7GB |
| Q3_K_M | 15.9GB | 8.1GB | 16.1GB |
| Q4_K_M | 19.9GB | 4.1GB | 12.1GB |
| Q5_K_M | 23.3GB | 0.7GB; not a safe resident target | 8.7GB |
| Q6_K | 26.9GB | Does not fit wholly | 5.1GB |
| Q8_0 | 34.8GB | Does not fit wholly | Does not fit wholly |
The important boundary is not a synthetic score. RTX 4090 can hold the listed Q4 file with 4.1GB of nominal room, but the Q5 margin is unsafe and Q6 exceeds 24GB before runtime allocations. RTX 5090 leaves 12.1GB, 8.7GB and 5.1GB for those files respectively, while the listed 34.8GB Q8 file still exceeds it. Read the 32B VRAM requirements guide.
Choose RTX 4090 when 24GB is enough
- The complete measured workload remains comfortably inside 24GB.
- The delivered price, condition and warranty make the older card the better total-system value.
- Your existing runtime and extensions are proven on Ada capability 8.9.
- The lower 450W reference board power materially improves the build.
Review the RTX 4090 page and the 24GB GPU buyer guide. Used-card condition, connector history, hotspot behavior, warranty and return protection belong in the decision.
Choose RTX 5090 when 32GB changes the workload
- The model, cache, context or concurrency needs more than a comfortable 24GB allocation.
- A resident 32GB path avoids CPU offload that would change the comparison.
- Your exact stack supports Blackwell capability 12.0.
- Matched tests justify the higher board power, cooling and delivered cost.
Review the RTX 5090 page and the 32GB GPU buyer guide.
Do not turn specifications into a benchmark
RTX 5090 has more published bandwidth, more CUDA cores and newer tensor hardware. Those facts do not provide prompt-processing rate, generation rate, time to first token, energy per request or value for your stack. Hold model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, timing boundary and repetitions constant.
Record exact board, power limit, clocks, display use, exposed memory, peak device memory, CPU offload, system RAM and wall power. If RTX 4090 spills weights or cache while RTX 5090 stays resident, disclose the different placement rather than presenting the result as a pure generation comparison.
A five-step purchase test
- Choose the exact artifact, context, cache precision and concurrency.
- Measure or estimate the complete peak allocation and preserve headroom.
- Confirm the software chain on each exact architecture.
- Run a matched long workload and record latency, throughput, failures, memory, temperature, noise and wall power.
- Compare delivered price, warranty, return terms, card condition and any PSU or case changes.
