Short answer: choose the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB for local AI unless the complete workload has already been measured with safe headroom below 8GB. NVIDIA sells 8GB and 16GB RTX 4060 Ti cards under the same family name. The published compute platform is otherwise closely aligned, but the smaller card has half the nominal device memory—and that can decide whether a model stays wholly on the GPU, needs offload, or fails at the intended context.
Verify the exact SKU before comparing offers. “RTX 4060 Ti” alone does not identify memory capacity. Confirm 8GB or 16GB on the partner product page and board label, then enter the exact model, quantization, context and concurrency in the VRAM calculator. Model files are only the starting allocation.
RTX 4060 Ti 8GB vs 16GB: official platform comparison
| Official reference specification | RTX 4060 Ti 8GB | RTX 4060 Ti 16GB | Local-AI meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Ada Lovelace | Ada Lovelace | Same software generation |
| Memory | 8GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 | The 16GB SKU doubles the nominal device-memory pool |
| Memory interface | 128-bit | 128-bit | Interface width does not answer model fit or establish token rate |
| CUDA cores / boost | 4,352 / 2.54GHz | 4,352 / 2.54GHz | Published compute counts are aligned; capacity remains the decisive fit difference |
| CUDA capability | 8.9 | 8.9 | Both use the same Ada software-support target |
| Total graphics power | 165W or 160W in NVIDIA’s family reference table | Confirm the exact variant and partner board instead of assigning one value from the family name | |
| Required system power | 550W reference | 550W reference | Complete-system requirements vary |
| NVLink | No | No | A second card is not one automatic shared memory pool |
Exact model-file boundaries
The following values come from official Qwen GGUF repository displays. “Margin” is nominal card capacity minus displayed model-file size only. It excludes KV cache, runtime workspace, allocator behavior, display use, vision components and concurrent requests.
| Official artifact | Displayed files | 8GB result | 16GB result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct Q4_K_M | 4.68GB | 3.32GB file-only margin | 11.32GB file-only margin |
| Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct Q8_0 | about 8.10GB | Files already exceed 8GB | about 7.90GB file-only margin |
| Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct Q2_K | 5.77GB | 2.23GB file-only margin, with a severe low-bit quality tradeoff to evaluate | 10.23GB file-only margin |
| Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct Q4_K_M | 8.99GB | Does not fit wholly in 8GB | 7.01GB file-only margin |
| Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct Q6_K | 12.1GB | Does not fit wholly in 8GB | 3.9GB file-only margin before runtime allocations |
When the 8GB card can be enough
- The exact model, cache, context and runtime peak have been measured below 8GB with useful headroom.
- You accept smaller quantizations, short context, low concurrency or CPU offload.
- Local AI is secondary to another workload and the 8GB system is materially cheaper.
- You have a defined exit path if future models cross the limit.
A one-time launch is not proof of sustained fit. Repeat the intended input/output lengths, cache behavior, batch and concurrency while watching peak device memory. Compare other entry cards in the best 8GB GPU guide.
When the 16GB card is the safer choice
- You want practical room for common 7B quantizations plus cache and runtime overhead.
- You plan to run 14B Q4/Q5 or selected Q6 artifacts wholly on the GPU after measuring total allocations.
- You need longer context, vision input, larger batch or multiple requests.
- You want to avoid buying an 8GB card and replacing it after one workload change.
Sixteen gigabytes is not unlimited. The official Qwen2.5-14B Q8_0 display size is 15.7GB, leaving almost no nominal room before runtime allocations. Read the dedicated RTX 4060 Ti 16GB guide and the four-card 16GB comparison.
More memory does not automatically mean more speed
If the same complete workload fits on both cards without changing the execution path, extra unused capacity does not prove higher tokens per second. If the 8GB card offloads layers, reduces context or changes cache precision while the 16GB card stays wholly on GPU, the runs are no longer controlled equivalents. Measure prompt processing, generation, time to first token, peak memory and wall energy separately.
For a controlled pair, hold model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, warm-ups and timing boundary constant. Record exact partner SKU, board power limit, display use, exposed memory, CPU offload and per-device peak.
Ada software and board checks
- Confirm the listing, product code and board label identify 8GB or 16GB.
- Verify the driver, CUDA runtime, framework, inference runtime and kernels support capability 8.9.
- Check exact dimensions, cooling, power connector, PSU and warranty.
- Measure runtime-visible memory instead of assuming the full label is available.
- Run the actual workload long enough to include cache growth and sustained thermals.
- Keep fit, speed, quality, power and purchase price as separate decisions.
What should you buy?
| Situation | More defensible path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Measured sub-8GB workload with headroom | 8GB may be sufficient | You have evidence for the exact use case |
| Uncertain or changing local-AI workload | 16GB | More room for artifacts, cache, context and runtime variance |
| 14B Q4/Q5 target | 16GB | The official Q4_K_M and Q5_K_M files exceed 8GB |
| General 32B target | Neither as a comfortable default | Consider 24GB+, offload or a smaller model |
| Small 16GB price premium | 16GB | Capacity cannot be added to the 8GB board later |
| Large 16GB premium | Compare the full market | Include used 12GB/24GB, newer 16GB cards, warranty and power |
