Qwen3-VL VRAM Requirements: 2B vs 4B vs 8B vs 32B

Short answer: Qwen3-VL spans very different memory classes. The smallest complete official Q4 paths are 1.552GB for 2B, 2.951GB for 4B, 5.780GB for 8B and 20.535GB for 32B after adding the required Q8_0 vision projector. Practical starting tiers are 4GB–8GB for 2B, 6GB–12GB for 4B, 12GB–32GB for 8B and 32GB–96GB for 32B, depending on precision and workload.

Every official GGUF path has two parts: a language-model file and a separate multimodal projector. Add both before reserving KV cache, image/video state, runtime buffers, display use and concurrency. File size is not peak resident memory.

Cache geometry changes with model size

The official configurations share eight KV heads, a 128-element head dimension and native 262,144-token architecture, but layer counts differ. With FP16/BF16 keys and values, one sequence uses 2 × layers × 8 × 128 × 2 bytes per allocated text token.

Illustrative one-sequence payload arithmetic. Runtime implementation, cache quantization, batching and multimodal tokens can change observed use.

Which Qwen3-VL size should you choose?

  • Choose 2B when memory is the hard constraint and you can validate that its outputs meet your task.
  • Choose 4B for a compact step up that still has complete official Q4/Q8 paths below 5GB.
  • Choose 8B when 12GB–16GB hardware is available and you want more model capacity without entering workstation-class memory.
  • Choose 32B only when the task justifies a 20.535GB complete Q4 artifact before cache and runtime state.

Parameter count does not establish visual accuracy, speed or value. Compare the exact variants on representative images, documents and video rather than selecting from size alone.

Detailed Qwen3-VL guides

Use the Qwen3-VL 8B VRAM guide for 8GB–32GB planning and the Qwen3-VL 32B VRAM guide for 24GB–96GB planning. Compare the prior generation in the Qwen2.5-VL family guide or compare other architectures in the multimodal VRAM hub.

Validate a complete multimodal workload

  1. Record exact repository, revision, size, Instruct/Thinking variant, language file, projector and checksums.
  2. Record runtime/version and prove that the image or video path is active.
  3. Record weight, projector and cache precision plus device placement and offload.
  4. Fix image dimensions/count, sampled frames, text allocation, output target and concurrency.
  5. Measure accelerator and system memory before load, after load, after vision encoding and at peak generation.
  6. Capture preprocessing time, time to first token, throughput, fallback and errors.

Use the VRAM calculator, repeatable workload test and benchmark submission builder. For hardware tiers, compare 8GB–16GB, 24GB–48GB and 48GB–96GB.

Reviewed October 25, 2026. Artifact sizes and architecture fields were read from official Qwen repositories. HighVRAM has not independently benchmarked every size, runtime, image/video workload, variant or quantization. File size is not peak resident memory.
