Short answer: 4GB is practical for the complete official Q4 path and a bounded Q8 target, 6GB gives Q8 useful room and can be a tight BF16 target, while 8GB is the practical BF16 tier. The official GGUF deployment requires both a language file and a separate multimodal projector.
Add the projector before sizing hardware. Qwen’s official Q4_K_M language file is 1.107GB, but the complete path is 1.552GB with the Q8_0 projector or 1.927GB with the F16 projector. Then reserve KV cache, vision state, runtime buffers and display use.
Qwen3-VL 2B files and practical tiers
| Official deployment path | Displayed files | Combined file size | Planning tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q4_K_M + Q8 projector | 1.107GB + 0.445GB | 1.552GB | 4GB practical |
| Q4_K_M + F16 projector | 1.107GB + 0.819GB | 1.927GB | 4GB bounded; 6GB roomier |
| Q8_0 + Q8 projector | 1.834GB + 0.445GB | 2.279GB | 4GB bounded; 6GB practical |
| Q8_0 + F16 projector | 1.834GB + 0.819GB | 2.654GB | 4GB tight; 6GB practical |
| Official BF16 safetensors | Single file totaling 4.255GB | 4.255GB | 6GB tight; 8GB practical |
What fits in 4GB, 6GB and 8GB?
- 4GB: practical for Q4 at a bounded context; Q8 needs tighter control of cache, vision inputs, runtime state and display use.
- 6GB: practical for either official Q8 pair; BF16 is tight because its 4.255GB weights still need cache and runtime memory.
- 8GB: practical for BF16 with a bounded context and modest multimodal workload; verify observed peak use rather than relying on file size.
CPU or unified-memory deployments can trade accelerator residency for system-memory use and speed. Do not describe shared memory as dedicated VRAM, and do not assume partial offload preserves full-accelerator performance.
KV cache: 112KiB per allocated text token
Qwen’s official 2B configuration lists 28 language layers, eight KV heads and a 128-element head dimension. With FP16/BF16 keys and values, one sequence uses 2 × 28 × 8 × 128 × 2 = 114,688 bytes, or 112KiB per allocated text token.
| Allocated text tokens | FP16/BF16 KV payload |
|---|---|
| 4K | 0.4375GiB |
| 8K | 0.875GiB |
| 32K | 3.5GiB |
| 64K | 7GiB |
| 256K architectural maximum | 28GiB |
Native 256K context is an architectural maximum, not a compact-device promise. The illustrative cache payload alone is 28GiB at that allocation.
Vision memory is workload-dependent
- Images: dimensions and count change visual-token volume and intermediate state.
- Video: sampled frames, duration, resolution and timestamp processing change memory and work.
- DeepStack: the configuration fuses intermediate vision features from layers 5, 11 and 17.
- Projector precision: the official Q8_0 and F16 projector files differ by about 374MB.
- Concurrency: parallel requests multiply request-specific allocations.
- Runtime: verify the exact Transformers, vLLM, SGLang, llama.cpp or application version and prove the image/video path works.
Qwen3-VL 2B versus 4B
The official complete Q4 paths are 1.552GB for 2B and 2.951GB for 4B with their Q8_0 projectors. Their FP16/BF16 cache geometries also differ: 112KiB per token for 2B and 144KiB for 4B. Those capacity differences do not prove a universal visual-accuracy, quality, speed or value winner.

Reproducible Qwen3-VL 2B fit test
- Record exact repository, revision, Instruct/Thinking variant, language file, projector and checksums.
- Record runtime/version and verify Qwen3-VL image and video support.
- Record model, projector and cache precision plus device placement or offload.
- Fix image dimensions/count, video sampling, text allocation, output target and concurrency.
- Measure accelerator and system memory before load, after load, after vision encoding and at peak generation.
- Use image-grounded and video-grounded prompts; text output alone does not prove modality support.
- Capture preprocessing time, time to first token, throughput, fallback and errors.
Use the 3B/4B sizing guide, 8GB–16GB capacity comparison, VRAM calculator, workload test and benchmark submission.

Reviewed October 25, 2026. Artifact sizes and architecture fields were read from official Qwen repositories. HighVRAM has not independently benchmarked every runtime, image/video workload, variant or quantization. File size is not peak resident memory.
Hybrid successor comparison: Qwen3.5-2B uses a 3:1 linear/full-attention stack and community GGUF provenance, so its cache and artifact assumptions differ from Qwen3-VL 2B.
Smaller hybrid alternative: Qwen3.5-0.8B uses a 3:1 linear/full-attention stack and community GGUF provenance; its compact files do not remove projector or runtime-state requirements.
