HighVRAM’s new 24B LLM hardware guide turns exact model files into a practical 16GB-through-64GB+ decision. The central finding is simple: the best GPU for a 24B LLM depends on the exact quantization, context, runtime and task—not the parameter label alone.
The four boundaries
| Model artifact | Displayed size | Practical hardware interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Q4_K_M | 14.3GB | 16GB is constrained; 24GB provides useful runtime and context room |
| Q5_K_M | 16.8GB | Exceeds one 16GB device; 24GB is the practical tier |
| Q8_0 | 25.1GB | Exceeds one 24GB device; 32GB is the first common tier above the file |
| BF16 | 47.2–48.023GB | 48GB is a file-size boundary, not a comfortable complete workload; plan 64GB+ |
What changes the answer
- Context and concurrency: KV cache and repeated sequences consume memory alongside the weights.
- Workload type: Mistral Small, Devstral and Magistral add different vision, agent-tool and formatting requirements.
- Memory model: dedicated VRAM, unified system memory and aggregate multi-GPU capacity are not interchangeable.
- Complete system: runtime support, CPU architecture, power, cooling, host RAM and storage can rule out a seemingly adequate card.
Follow the decision path
- Open the 24B hardware guide and choose the exact artifact tier.
- Use the VRAM calculator for context, concurrency and working margin.
- Use the comparison directory to separate the relevant hardware paths.
- Inspect benchmark evidence; if the pair is missing, build a reproducible record.
- When ready to shop, stage a private watchlist before checking offers.
