Qwen3-32B VRAM Requirements: 24GB, 32GB or 48GB?

Short answer: Qwen’s official Qwen3-32B GGUF repository publishes a 19.8GB Q4_K_M, 22.6GB Q5_0, 23.2GB Q5_K_M, 26.9GB Q6_K and 34.8GB Q8_0. Twenty-four gigabytes is primarily a Q4 and carefully bounded Q5 tier; 32GB opens Q6 and more cache headroom; 48GB is the practical one-device tier for Q8_0, longer context or additional working margin.

Exact model: this guide covers Qwen/Qwen3-32B, a dense model whose official full-precision repository displays 65.5GB. It is not Qwen3-30B-A3B: that adjacent model is a 30B-total/3B-active MoE with different architecture, memory traffic and cache geometry.

Official Qwen3-32B files

Official artifactDisplayed sizeCapacity implication before overhead
Q4_K_M GGUF19.8GB24GB starting path, with about 4GB left before cache and runtime state
Q5_0 GGUF22.6GBExtremely tight on 24GB before a useful cache; stronger 32GB target
Q5_K_M GGUF23.2GBFile nearly fills 24GB; 32GB provides more credible working room
Q6_K GGUF26.9GBExceeds 24GB and targets 32GB with controlled context
Q8_0 GGUF34.8GBExceeds 32GB before cache; points toward 48GB
Full-precision repository65.5GBRequires a much larger pool or multi-device/offload strategy

Repository display sizes are artifact sizes, not peak device-memory measurements. Mapping, metadata, kernels, graph buffers, scratch space and display use can change the observed allocation.

KV-cache payload at 8K, 32K, 40K and 128K

For one sequence with FP16 key/value entries, use 2 × 64 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dimension × 2 bytes × token slots.

Allocated token slotsIllustrative FP16 K+V payloadPlanning consequence
8,1922GiBMaterial even for the Q4 file on a 24GB card
32,7688GiBQ4 plus cache already approaches 28GB before runtime overhead
40,96010GiBReflects the configuration field before other allocations
131,07232GiBExtended FP16 cache alone consumes an entire 32GB label

This is architecture arithmetic, not a measured peak. Cache quantization, paging, batch size, concurrency, alignment and runtime implementation can materially change the allocation.

Can Qwen3-32B run on 24GB?

The official 19.8GB Q4_K_M is the clearest 24GB path. At 8K, the illustrative FP16 weights-plus-cache subtotal is about 21.8GB before runtime buffers, which can still be tight on a display-attached GPU. Q5_0 and Q5_K_M leave too little room for a normal FP16 cache without quantized cache, partial offload or a much shorter allocation. Load success does not validate the target context.

What does 32GB change?

Thirty-two gigabytes is the stronger Q4-through-Q6 tier and creates useful context headroom. It does not make Q8_0 fit, because the official file is already 34.8GB. At 32K, even Q4_K_M plus the illustrative FP16 cache approaches 27.8GB before other allocations, so the exact runtime still matters.

What does 48GB change?

Forty-eight gigabytes can target the official Q8_0 with practical working room and supports larger Q4–Q6 contexts or concurrency. It is not an automatic 128K FP16-cache tier: Q8_0 plus the illustrative 32GiB cache already exceeds 48GB before runtime overhead. Quantized cache or multiple devices can change the path, but should be tested rather than inferred.

Qwen3-32B versus Qwen3-30B-A3B

The similar names conceal different architectures. Qwen3-32B is dense, so each token uses the full model. Qwen3-30B-A3B stores roughly 30B total parameters but activates about 3B per token; total stored weights still matter for fit, while active parameters can affect compute. Do not choose between them from a parameter label alone—test output quality, prompt processing, generation speed and memory under the same workload.

A reproducible Qwen3-32B test

  1. Record the exact artifact, revision, runtime and version.
  2. Record device model, visible memory, display use and offload split.
  3. Fix prompt tokens, output limit, cache precision, batch and concurrency.
  4. Test thinking and non-thinking workloads separately.
  5. Measure peak device and host memory for the complete request.
  6. Record prompt processing, generation speed and time to first token separately.
  7. Evaluate output quality on the same prompts before choosing a quantization or architecture.

Sources and limits

Reviewed October 25, 2026. Artifact sizes, architecture and context fields come from Qwen’s official repositories and announcement. Cache figures are transparent architecture arithmetic, not measured peak-memory claims. HighVRAM has not independently benchmarked every runtime and device. Fit does not establish speed, output quality or value.
