Implementation path: run Qwen3.8-27B with llama.cpp or Ollama using a separately labeled community GGUF and a reproducible text-first test.
Current 27B release: read the Qwen3.8-27B VRAM guide for exact community GGUF sizes alongside official FP8 and standard checkpoint totals.
Short answer: a 27B local LLM can be meaningfully easier to fit than a 32B model, but parameter count alone is not enough. Google’s official Gemma 3 27B instruction-tuned QAT Q4_0 GGUF is 17.2GB, so the model file alone exceeds a nominal 16GB pool; the same repository lists a separate 858MB FP16 multimodal projector. That makes 24GB the first common single-device starting tier for this official artifact, while image use and longer context still need measured headroom. Qwen’s official 32B Q4_K_M example is 19.9GB, which points more strongly toward 24GB or above. Context, cache design, multimodal inputs, runtime buffers and concurrency still decide the complete budget.
Estimate the complete workload: enter 27B or 32B, precision, context and concurrency in the LLM VRAM calculator. Then validate the exact artifact and runtime.
27B VRAM requirements by raw precision
Raw-weight arithmetic is parameters × bits per weight ÷ 8. It excludes format metadata, mixed-precision tensors, KV cache, the vision encoder and runtime allocations.
| Nominal precision | Raw weights for exactly 27B parameters | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2-bit | 6.75GB | Small capacity target; quality and format support require testing |
| 3-bit | 10.125GB | Can target 12GB only after the complete workload is checked |
| 4-bit | 13.5GB | Real artifacts can approach or exceed 16GB |
| 5-bit | 16.875GB | Usually points toward 24GB or more |
| 6-bit | 20.25GB | Can be tight on 24GB after cache and runtime overhead |
| 8-bit | 27GB | Usually points toward 32GB or more |
| 16-bit | 54GB | Points beyond 48GB before cache and runtime allocations |
Official example: Gemma 3 27B QAT Q4_0
Google’s official Gemma 3 27B instruction-tuned QAT Q4_0 GGUF repository currently lists a 17.2GB model file and a separate 858MB FP16 multimodal projector in its file tree. Google describes the release as quantization-aware trained. That makes it useful capacity evidence for this exact file, not proof that every 27B 4-bit artifact has the same size or quality.
- 16GB: the 17.2GB model file alone is larger than the nominal pool, before cache and runtime allocations.
- 24GB: leaves materially more room for cache and runtime state.
- 32GB: adds context, concurrency or multimodal headroom, but unused capacity does not guarantee speed.
Gemma 3 cache and multimodal behavior need runtime validation
Google’s official configuration describes a multimodal conditional-generation model with a text stack of 62 layers, 32 attention heads, 16 KV heads, 128 head dimensions and a 1,024-token sliding window, plus a separate vision configuration. The generation configuration identifies a hybrid cache implementation.
A simple full-attention KV formula would not faithfully represent that hybrid sliding-window design, and an image request can add vision-model allocations. For that reason, this guide does not publish a single synthetic cache number for Gemma 3 27B. Use the runtime’s exact estimate and measure text-only and image-plus-text workloads separately.
27B versus 32B: official artifact comparison
| Example | Official artifact | Displayed size | Main implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemma 3 27B IT | QAT Q4_0 GGUF | 17.2GB model + 858MB vision projector | 16GB does not fit the model file; 24GB is the first common starting tier |
| Qwen2.5-32B Instruct | Q4_K_M GGUF | 19.9GB | 24GB can be practical with controlled context and overhead |
| Qwen2.5-32B Instruct | Q6_K GGUF | 26.9GB | Points toward 32GB or more |
| Qwen2.5-32B Instruct | Q8_0 GGUF | 34.8GB | Points beyond 32GB before cache and runtime allocations |

What each memory tier means
| Memory tier | Reasonable starting expectation | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| 16GB | The official 17.2GB Gemma QAT model file does not fit wholly in a nominal 16GB pool | That partial offload performs like a one-device fit |
| 24GB | More practical 27B Q4 path; many 32B Q4 configurations | That every long-context or multimodal request fits |
| 32GB | Larger 27B/32B quantizations plus more working margin | That the 34.8GB Qwen Q8 example fits |
| 48GB | Substantial headroom for displayed 27B/32B artifacts | That capacity establishes speed, quality or value |
| 64GB+ | Higher-precision weights, longer context, concurrency or adjacent 70B planning | That every platform supports the intended workload efficiently |
A validation checklist
- Choose the exact repository, artifact and license.
- Record quantization method, displayed size, context and concurrency.
- Separate text-only from image-plus-text memory measurements.
- Add runtime buffers, display use and other GPU allocations.
- Confirm the GPU, OS, driver, runtime and kernel support chain.
- Test a representative long request and evaluate output quality.
