RTX 5060 Ti 8GB vs 16GB for Local AI

Short answer: choose the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for local AI unless the exact workload has already been proven to stay safely below 8GB. NVIDIA sells both capacities under the same RTX 5060 Ti name. They share the published Blackwell platform specifications, but the 8GB card has half the model-memory ceiling. That difference can decide whether a model stays wholly on the GPU, needs CPU offload, or does not run with the intended context.

Do not buy from the family name alone. Confirm the exact partner SKU says 16GB or 8GB, then enter the actual model artifact, context and concurrency in the VRAM calculator. File size is only the starting allocation; cache, runtime workspace, vision components, display use and concurrent requests also consume memory.

Exact model-file boundaries

The examples below use the official Qwen GGUF repository display sizes. “Margin” means nominal card capacity minus the displayed model files only. It is not free memory after KV cache, runtime buffers, allocator behavior, the desktop, multimodal projectors or other processes.

When 8GB can still be enough

  • Your exact text model, quantization, cache and runtime peak have been measured below 8GB with useful headroom.
  • You accept smaller quantizations, shorter context, lower concurrency or partial CPU offload.
  • The card is primarily for another workload and local AI is occasional.
  • The complete 8GB system is materially cheaper and you have a defined upgrade or offload plan.

Do not use “the model launched once” as the entire test. Repeat the intended prompt length, output length, batch and concurrency while watching peak device memory. For a capacity-first comparison with other entry cards, use the best 8GB GPU guide.

When 16GB is the defensible choice

  • You want practical room for common 7B quantizations, cache and runtime overhead.
  • You intend to run 14B-class Q4/Q5 or selected Q6 artifacts wholly on the GPU after measuring total allocations.
  • You use longer context, vision inputs, larger batches or more than one request.
  • You want to delay CPU offload or a second hardware purchase.
  • The price premium is smaller than the cost of replacing an 8GB board that misses the workload boundary.

The 16GB SKU does not make every 16GB artifact safe. For example, the official Qwen2.5-14B Q8_0 display size is 15.7GB, leaving almost no nominal room before runtime allocations. Read the dedicated RTX 5060 Ti 16GB local-AI guide and the four-card 16GB comparison.

Capacity is not a speed benchmark

If the same complete workload fits on both variants, extra unused memory does not by itself prove higher token rate. Conversely, when the 8GB card must offload layers or reduce context while the 16GB card stays wholly on the GPU, the two tests are no longer the same execution path. Measure prompt processing, generation, time to first token, peak memory and wall energy separately.

For a controlled comparison, hold the exact model revision, quantization, runtime/version, kernel path, context, cache precision, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency, warm-ups and timing boundary constant. Record exact partner SKU, power limit, display use, exposed memory, CPU offload and per-device peak.

Blackwell and board checks apply to both

  1. Verify the exact listing and board-partner product code exposes 8GB or 16GB as intended.
  2. Confirm the host driver, CUDA runtime, framework, inference runtime and compiled kernels support compute capability 12.0.
  3. Check card length, thickness, cooling, connector and PSU guidance for the exact board.
  4. Measure usable exposed memory rather than assuming the full label is available.
  5. Run the actual workload long enough to include cache growth and sustained thermals.
  6. Keep quality, fit, speed, power and purchase price as separate decision dimensions.

What should you buy?

Considering a higher GPU tier with less memory? Compare RTX 5070 12GB with RTX 5060 Ti 16GB without treating tier, capacity or published bandwidth as a universal speed result.
