This week’s useful question: when does an 8GB GPU remain defensible, when is 12GB the better floor, and when should a buyer leave both tiers for 16GB? The answer is workload headroom—not architecture labels or peak specifications.
1. What changed
HighVRAM completed three capacity-first buyer paths: RTX 4060 vs RTX 5060 at 8GB, RTX 3060 vs RTX 5070 at 12GB, and the four-card RTX 16GB path. Each separates the shared model-fit ceiling from generation, power, software support and measured performance.
2. The three-tier decision map
| Tier | Exact artifact boundary | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB | Qwen3.5-4B community Q8_0 + F16 projector: 5.155GB; 2.845GB file-only margin | Compact models with bounded context/modality; leave the tier when working-state headroom is uncertain |
| 12GB | Qwen3.5-9B Q4 pair: 6.599GB and 5.401GB margin; Q8 pair: 10.446GB and unsafe 1.554GB margin | Practical Q4 step; do not plan the listed Q8 pair from file fit alone |
| 16GB | The same 9B Q8 pair leaves 5.554GB file-only margin; official 19.306GB BF16 still does not fit | More useful cache, modality and concurrency room, but not an unlimited upgrade |
3. Why generation does not replace capacity
RTX 4060 and RTX 5060 both expose 8GB. RTX 3060 12GB and RTX 5070 both expose 12GB. Newer architecture, higher published bandwidth or larger AI TOPS can matter to a compatible measured workload, but none changes the file gate. Use the 8GB/12GB/16GB capacity guide before comparing speed.
4. Try a reproducible comparison
- Inspect the exact Qwen3.5-4B or Qwen3.5-9B artifact and projector.
- Use the memory planner as a starting point, not a measured result.
- Hold model revision, quantization, projector, runtime/kernel, context, cache, modality, prompt/output profile, batch, concurrency and timing constant.
- Record exposed memory, per-device peak, display use and any CPU/system-memory offload.
- Use the exact RTX 4060/5060 or RTX 3060/5070 starters; they stage hardware fields only and save nothing automatically.
5. Return or contribute
The private browser watchlist now includes combined 8GB and 12GB comparison presets plus the existing 16GB paths. Presets preserve condition, budget and cadence and write nothing until Save. To evaluate published evidence, use the benchmark database.
Evidence boundary
The database remains a fixed snapshot of 43 metric observations from seven sources. It does not establish a controlled RTX 4060-vs-RTX 5060 or RTX 3060-vs-RTX 5070 winner. Fit, compatibility, speed, output quality and value are separate claims.
